ECHO
"Alright, everyone! It's now or never!"
A tinge of fear ran through Echo Wilson. The night she'd been dreading for months had finally arrived. She stood among the crowd gathered at the motorcycle-circled cabins in the middle of the woods. She was at the headquarters of her bear pack, the Hearteater Clan, and all she could think about was how she didn't want to be there.
She realized she was alone in that sentiment. The rest of the Hearteaters—all clad in denim and leather, let out cheers and other cries of excitement.
"Echo!" shouted a man's voice from behind her. It was one that she recognized instantly.
She turned and was greeted with the sight of Stone, the pack's alpha. Tall and muscular, his hair and beard coal-black, he looked every bit the part of the leader.
"What the hell are you doing just standing around?"
Echo hated having the attention of Stone. He was all cocky swagger with that typical greedy, eager smirk on his face. He looked at her with that same hungry stare that he had for all the women of the pack, like all he could think about was throwing her over his shoulder and taking her back to his lodge to use her however he wanted.
"I don't know," Echo said, not sure what else to say.
Stone scoffed and shook his head.
"I don't know," he mimicked. "Not sure why I expected you to say anything different."
"Sorry," she said. "Just...excited about tonight, I guess."
"There you go," he said. "Excited is better."
Echo knew that "excited" didn't really describe how she felt. "Fearful" was more like it.
After all, tonight was the night of the claiming ceremony—the night the entire clan would learn which of the women was fated to become Stone's prime mate, the woman who'd carry his children.
"No," he said, stepping closer and cutting the distance between them to less than a foot. "That's not it, gorgeous. You're holding back on me, aren't you?"
He reached up and took her chin into his hand, tilting her head up to face him. Stone was tall, and built. Echo always felt he loved the way he towered over the women, and most of the men of the clan.
"Holding back what?"
His smirk spread.
"You think you're so hard to read, baby girl. But you know I can see right through you."
"I—"
He didn't let her finish.
"Let me guess," he said. "You're worried that it won't be you? That one of the other girls is going to be warming my bed from here on out?"
"Y-yeah," she said. "That's it."
He let go of her chin, moving his hand onto her cheek.
"Don't blame you," he said. "It's a hell of an honor to be the alpha's omega. She gets to carry my babies—she gets to be the favored mate."
All Echo wanted was to snatch his hand from her face and step away. But that would be the worst decision she could make. Stone was all alpha—all temper. Offending him would mean a slap.
Or worse.
"And the worst fucking part," he said. "Is that it's out of my hands. All we can do is perform the ceremony."
"I know," said Echo. "And that's what worries me."
It worried her, but not in the way that she knew Stone thought. She knew he could easily see through her lies in most cases, but hoped that this one would be close enough to the truth that he wouldn't.
"You and every other girl here," he said with another smirk. "The chosen omega...it's a hell of a life waiting for her. Carrying my cubs, sharing my bed, spending the rest of her natural life learning how to please me."
He shook his head.
"Don't blame you one bit."
Then Stone leaned in, closer to Echo's ear, close enough that his bristly beard rubbed against her fair skin.
"But I'm gonna let you in on a little secret, baby girl," he said. "See, being the alpha comes with its perks, you know?"
"What...what kind of perks?"
"See, I only get one omega. Only one girl's fit to carry my cubs. But that doesn't mean I don't get to have a little fun on the side."
He placed his hand on Echo's slender shoulder and turned her towards the rest of the pack, all of them lining up to begin the first part of the ceremony—the run. There were dozens of them, men and women, ready to shift and tear through the woods as fast as they could, eager to see who was the fastest.
"That means that every girl here is gonna warm my bed one night or another. And you bet that gorgeous little ass of yours that you're not going to get left out."
To make his point, Stone reached around and grabbed Echo's ass, giving it a squeeze before she realized what the hell was going on and jumped away.
"Hey!" she shouted. "What the!"
A few of the other members of the pack noticed and looked over. Stone's eyes narrowed, and Echo knew that she'd fucked up. Stone was a man used to getting what he wanted, and what she'd just done wasn't an option with someone like him.
"The fuck you say?" he asked after shooting a hard glare at the other members of the pack, getting them to mind their own business.
Shit, thought Echo.
"It was just...surprising," she said, forcing a small smile. "Getting grabbed by you. It...does things to me."
His anger faded, his grin returning.
"You're gonna need to get used to me having my hands all over you, baby girl," he said. "Because you've got no idea how long I've been waiting to get you naked and squirming underneath me. I'm gonna fill you so full you're not gonna be able to walk right for a week."
He put his hands on her hips and pulled her close, close enough to feel his cock through his jeans.
"You like that?" he asked, his voice a low growl. "Because it's gonna be yours. Not all yours...but something tells me you'll be happy to share."
Echo said nothing, only wanting to get out of his arms as fast as possible.
"Maybe tonight," he said. "But definitely soon."
He finally let her go, stepping back and dragging his eyes over her body.
"Now," he said. "Time to run."
Relief washed over Echo as Stone turned his back to her and approached the rest of the pack. As he did, she looked out into the woods, wondering if she had it in her to take off right then
and there, to break free from the Hearteater pack like she'd always wanted.
I've got the speed, she thought. Not a single bear here can outrun me. One of the few perks of being a half-breed.
But she knew, as fast as she was, that Stone wouldn't let her get far. And she also knew that the punishment would be fast and severe for throwing a wrench into the ceremony.
"Listen up, Hearteaters!" called out Stone as he made his way towards the pack. "You know what fucking time it is!"
Cheers and yells sounded from them. Echo glanced at the open woods one last time, before starting off toward the rest of the group and falling in.
The rest of the girls in the pack shot her the same dirty looks Echo was long used to by now. Despite being with the Hearteaters for all twenty-one years of her life, ever since her pregnant mother was taken in by them, she'd never fit it in with the rest of the women.
June, one of the girls, shot her a particularly sharp glare.
"Didn't think they'd let the half-breed be a part of this," she said quietly.
"Yeah," said Marlene, another of the girls. "You'd think being here would fuck up the whole ceremony."
"Screw off," hissed Echo as she fell into line.
"Wow," said June. "Same smart mouth as always. Bet Stone's going to be happy to put it to good use."
"Maybe when he's bored with the rest of us,” said Charity, a third girl nearby. "Because there's not a fucking chance in hell a half-breed like you is going to be chosen as Stone's omega."
Echo said nothing. She'd had her entire life to get used to the abuse from the other girls and wasn't about to let it get to her now.
She turned her attention back to Stone as he slowly paced in front of the pack, his hands behind his back.
"I've been your fucking alpha from day one," he said, slamming his fist against his chest. "But tradition's tradition, and tonight's the night we make it official."
He paused as he paced back and forth, letting his words hang in the cool night air. Stone pointed off into the woods.
"And I'm not going to waste any more fucking time!" he shouted. "When I give the word, I want you all to run! You find the site and we start this thing! Got it?"
The men let out yells of anticipation, and the women stood silently, all with the same sensual smile on their faces as they gazed at Stone. Echo couldn't believe how obvious they were being, how shamelessly they wanted to throw themselves at him.
But Echo wanted no part of that.
"When I say go, you go!" shouted Stone, his voice booming through the woods. "Now shift!"
One after another, the members of the pack shifted into their bear forms until only Echo and Stone remained human. Stone shot her a quick glance, one that said, "quit screwing around."
She closed her eyes and shifted, black fur sprouting from her skin, her hands and feet shifting into paws.
"Now," said Stone. "Move!"
He shifted into his black bear form, and it was on.
Without another word, Echo turned towards the woods and ran, knowing deep down that after tonight, her life would never be the same.
CHAPTER 2
ECHO
Echo didn't waste any time leaving the rest of the pack in her dust. One of the few advantages of being a wolf-bear hybrid was the speed it gave her. Even though she looked like a bear—aside from the sharp, wolf-life eyes—she moved like a wolf.
She knew deep down that it wasn't a good idea to make the other members of the pack look bad, but Echo couldn't help it. She loved to run, to feel the wind on her fur. The trees around her passed in blurs, silver-sheened from the light of the full moon above.
And it wasn't just speed. Echo had the senses and instincts of a wolf. While the other bears need to make sure to move slowly and cautiously through the trees, so they didn't slam their big bodies into them, she had a sixth sense about it all, darting around them.
Before too long, she approached the clearing in the woods where the ceremony was to take place. It was an open space, with a large bonfire set up to be lit. Echo arrived and was alone when she shifted back to her human form and stepped up to the fire pit.
The woods were quiet and calm, and she loved it. As one of the females of the pack she was rarely, if ever, allowed to be on her on away from the supervision of one of the men. When she had the opportunity to be alone, she savored it.
But not for long.
"Fucking show-off bitch," June said behind her.
She turned to see the rest of the pack arrived, shifting into their human forms as they broke through the clearing.
"Hey," said Echo. "Don't blame me if you can't keep up."
June narrowed her eyes as she stepped toward Echo.
"The only reason you can move like that is because you've got that fucking wolf blood in you."
"Yeah," said Charity, her dark hair mussed and draped over her eyes. "I'm fine with being a little slower if that means I'm not a freak of nature."
Echo wasn't in the mood. She glared at Charity and Marlene and June, her body still rushing with blood from the run.
"You want to say that again?" said Echo. "I dare you."
The men and the rest of the women made their way closer to the scene. Stone was among them, and Echo spotted him out of the corner of her eye. He said nothing, instead watching the scene unfold.
"Wow," said Marlene. "Bitch thinks that because she can run that she'd be able to take three of us on at once."
Echo's body tensed. She knew that it was more than three—all the women of the pack hated her. It's just that June and her little clique were the most vocal about it. But she didn't care.
"How about it, Stone?" asked June, turning in Stone's direction. "Why don't we get this party started right? Let us take one of us out of the competition, huh?"
Stone stepped in, seeming to realize it was time to put his foot down.
"Calm the fuck down, June," he said. "This is my night, and I'm not gonna let your little cat fight ruin it for me."
"But Stone—"
"But nothing," he growled. "Fall in line and do as you're told."
Then his eyes shot to Echo, that smile he wore when he'd put his hands on her returning. Echo knew that he wasn't protecting her because he had any special liking for her other than sex.
He clapped his hands together, the sound echoing through the clearing.
"Gather ‘round!" he shouted. "I'm not gonna tell you fuckers twice!"
The clan did as they were told, forming a large circle around the fire pit. Stone took his place in the center.
"It'd been years since I took control of this clan," he said. "And one year since I led you all to battle against the Blackrock wolves, and drove those miserable fucks out of the region."
Cheers sounded from the pack. Echo thought back to the war, how not only had Stone fought off the Blackrocks and taken control of their territory, he'd used the opportunity to push aside any competitors in the clan for alpha. A few good men of the clan had been sent by him on suicide missions, never to return.
"And now the Hearteater clan is richer and more powerful than it's ever been. But I'm not about to stand around and waste this chance to grow even stronger!"
More cheers.
"But first thing's first," he said. "And tradition is tradition. It's time for me to officially become the alpha of this clan, and to find out which of you is going to be my omega."
His eyes moved from girl to girl, lingering on Echo's for a time that she was certain had been longer than the rest.
Don't freak out about it, she thought to herself. There’re more than two dozen other girls in the clan. The odds of the fire picking you are slim to none.
But despite thinking about it logically, Echo couldn't help but feel fear. She couldn't imagine what would be worse than being chosen as Stone's omega, to be his mate, to sleep in his bed, to carry his children...
"You all know how this works!" he said. "Because tonight's not just about choosing my omega and making me th
e alpha—it's about all of us finding out where we fit into the clan. Shit's been crazy since the war with the Blackrocks, and we lost a shitload of good men."
Yeah, thought Echo. Good men that you pretty much killed.
"So, let's get this started!" he shouted.
More cheers. Stone went over to the side of the fire pit and picked up two items—the flame that would be used to light the fire, and a large buck knife.
"I start the flame," he said. "Then one-by-one, we draw our blood with the knife and throw it into the fire. For the men, red means alpha, blue means beta, and white means delta. For the girls, the color you get means that you'll be expected to pair with a man of the same color. No exceptions."
Then he allowed himself a small smirk.
"But it goes without fucking saying that as alpha, I get my choice of who I want to mate with, and when. Only one of you girls is gonna be lucky enough to carry my cubs."
Echo glanced at the pack. She could tell by the hard looks on the mens’ faces that they weren't thrilled with the idea that Stone would be able to fuck their women whenever he wanted. Though this was a privilege the alpha was entitled to, most shifter clans didn't follow it.
But Stone was different. He wanted it all—power, money, and women. And Echo knew that as of tonight, the pack would be expected to fall into line.
Or else.
"No more bullshit!" he shouted. "Let's do this!"
After jabbing the knife blade into the dirt, Stone took a silver lighter out of his pocket and set the torch alight. Once it was ready, he tossed it into the fire pit. The flames spread instantly, and soon a raging, roaring fire cast the pack in a flickering orange glow, its heat filling the air.
"I go first!" he said. "Then the men, then the women."
With that, he took the knife from the ground and pressed the blade against his palm. He winced as the knife cut his skin before he flicked the blood into the flame.
The fire turned a deep, blood-red instantly. Cheers shot up from the crowd.
It was official—Stone was the new alpha of the pack.
He could hardly hold back his cocky smile as he made his way over to one of the men and pressed the handle of the blade into his hand. The man, his face solemn, stepped over to the fire. Once he stood where Stone had been, he sliced open his hand and flicked his blood into the fire.
